Artist Concept:

"Shatter Proof" marks the inception of my journey into sustainable art, crafted in 2000. This piece is a reflection on memory and history, utilising repurposed materials such as an old door, one and two cent pieces, and shattered mirror fragments. These coins, now obsolete in New Zealand, serve as a poignant reminder of the past and a commentary on the fleeting nature of currency and value.

The process of creating this piece involved my first exploration into mirror shattering—a symbolic act performed by wrapping the mirror and throwing it from a great height. The resulting fragments form the backdrop to the central motif: the Maori Koru, a spiral shape representing growth, strength, and peace. Through this work, I delve into themes of systemic poverty and its enduring impact on generations, capturing the essence of finding small, forgotten treasures in times of financial struggle.

Junk and Disorderly Disclaimer:

I am in the business of Junk, old unused items people are going to throw away.  My joy as a recreator is to wave my magic shiny wand and transform them into something I am proud to send out my door.  It must be said though, that there is nothing perfect in the old (sorry mum) - if you look closely, you are going to find rust, scratches or the odd ugly backside as I endeavour to do my best in a sustainable way.  With upcycling, must come the understanding that these come to you flawed.  like the sediment in an old wine, or a tarnished old coin from years ago.  Enjoy the old and celebrate our flaws, old or new!  Thanks MSM.

Note: Please be advised that my range of upcycled wall sculptures can be quite heavy. It is essential that they are hung correctly, on a suitable weight-bearing location of your wall, specifically on the stud line. All my artworks have been previously hung in-house for over 72 hours to ensure their ability to bear weight properly. Shipping of my heavier sculptures is available upon application.

  • My Shiny Perspective:

"Shatter Proof" was the start of my journey into sustainable art, way back in 2000—back when one and two cent coins were still kicking around (and more likely to be found stuck in the couch cushions than in your wallet). This piece uses those very coins, now obsolete in New Zealand, as a cheeky nod to the past and a reminder that money may come and go, but memories (and hidden change) tend to stick around a bit longer.

The real fun began when I first tried my hand at shattering mirrors—imagine me wrapping a mirror and gleefully tossing it from a height, watching it smash into a thousand pieces like I was on some bizarre game show. These fragments form the backdrop to the Maori Koru, symbolising growth, strength, and peace. Through this work, I tackle serious themes like systemic poverty and the hunt for small forgotten treasures… because, let’s face it, finding an old coin in the couch during hard times can feel like you’ve just hit the jackpot!
