Still We Belong explores what it means to find connection and belonging in a rapidly changing world.
Made up of three connected sections, the work reflects the tension between individuality and community. The central panel represents shared space — our collective ground — while the upper and lower panels gradually shift, tilt, and fragment, echoing how people grow, diverge, and shape their own identities over time. As forms move out of alignment, repeating black stripes evolve into silver and gold, symbolising diversity, difference, and the fluid nature of identity. Each piece stands independently, yet remains visually and conceptually tied to the whole.
Created from upcycled materials, the work speaks to modern life — where traditional bonds can feel strained by mobility, individualism, and uncertainty — while affirming the enduring human need for connection. It is a reminder that we can be separate and diverse, while still anchored to our community, our tribe, and our place in the world.
The Nikau Superette Installation
Three Acts of Joy

Created for Nikau Superette Art, a micro-gallery housed inside a restored community noticeboard in New Lynn, "Three Acts of Joy" transforms discarded DVDs, melted plastics, CD roses and resin shards into vibrant botanical forms arranged on a reclaimed mirror panel.
This site-responsive work reflects the quiet rhythms of the neighbourhood — the dairies that feel like whānau, the unseen labour of small family businesses, and the shifting ways we gather and connect. Each recycled element carries threads of care, resilience and gentle regrowth, offering a joyful marker of local identity shaped from what the community leaves behind.
Nikau Superette Art is a micro-gallery housed inside a restored community noticeboard in New Lynn, Auckland. Originally built by neighbourhood support groups, the board has been repurposed into a small public exhibition space presenting site-responsive “micro shows.”
The project focuses on hyper-local themes — neighbourhood culture, small business life, ecological observations, social connection, and place-based storytelling. ArtsWhau documents the project as part of a community arts brokerage programme, where artists create seasonal installations specifically for this unique street-front context.
