Undertow is a contemporary wave wall sculpture inspired by Piha and Auckland’s rugged west coast. Thousands of black drinking straws form a sculptural wave within a handcrafted floating timber frame, shifting with the light and revealing new depth throughout the day.

Growing up in West Auckland, Piha was always accompanied by a warning: “Don’t swim there. It’s too dangerous.”
Its black sand and wild waves are mesmerising, but beneath their beauty lies an invisible force that commands respect—the undertow.
Created through Lisa Watkins’ practice of Circular Elevation, thousands of black drinking straws have been transformed into a sculptural wave suspended between beauty and warning, stillness and movement.
The artwork reflects on the unseen forces that shape our lives: the conversations we remember, the people we never forget and the quiet moments that alter our direction.
As the light changes, shadows deepen and new details emerge. The sculpture rewards curiosity, inviting the viewer to pause, look again and recognise what may be hidden beneath the surface.
