Underwritten Botanicals is a Luxury Botanical Wall Art NZ original by acclaimed New Zealand artist Lisa Watkins, created through her signature Circular Elevation practice.
Sometimes I wonder how much beauty we miss simply because we've stopped noticing it.
Underwritten Botanicals began with that thought.
Part of my Sign of the Times series, this artwork transforms storied acrylic signage into a celebration of curiosity, possibility and the quiet joy of looking a little closer.
The lettering once had a completely different purpose. It was designed to grab attention, sell something or point people in the right direction. Now it tells a different story.
Each letter has been carefully filled with pressed flowers, leaves, seed pods and other small botanical treasures gathered from my own garden and beyond. Suspended in warm autumn-toned resin, they become hundreds of tiny moments waiting to be discovered.
Across the centre, sweeping gestures of emerald, turquoise and cobalt move freely over the ordered typography beneath. I love the conversation between the two. One feels structured, the other instinctive. Together they remind me that some of the most beautiful things in life happen when we allow a little room for the unexpected.
One of my favourite things about this artwork is that it never really looks the same twice. Because sections of the piece are transparent, the light becomes part of the artwork. Depending on where you hang it, the colours, reflections and tiny botanical details change throughout the day. A white wall tells one story. A dark wall another. As the seasons change, so does the artwork.
One of the things I love most about art is that not everyone will see the same thing.
That's exactly as it should be.
The longer we spend with a piece, the more of ourselves we can often uncover.
