Environmental Responsibility

Lisa Watkins — Artist

As an individual artist, environmental responsibility is embedded in my creative practice rather than managed as a separate policy. Every artwork I create is made exclusively from upcycled, reclaimed, or donated materials that would otherwise be sent to landfill.

My practice centres on transforming discarded industrial, commercial, and domestic materials into public artworks, sculptures, and installations that are designed for longevity and public engagement. Material reuse is my primary climate action. I actively work with waste streams such as retired PPE boots, signage offcuts, salvaged acrylic, plastics, and gifted household items, prioritising circular use over the manufacture of new materials.

I am committed to continually reducing the environmental impact of my work through responsible material sourcing, durability-focused design, and localised fabrication where possible. I actively research and adopt lower-impact making techniques, including mechanical fixing methods, water-based and lower-toxicity finishes, and community-sourced materials.

Environmental responsibility within my practice also extends to public education and advocacy. Through visible making, regular public documentation, and community engagement, I aim to widen understanding of circular material use and encourage reuse, repair, and alternative ways of valuing materials.

This statement reflects an ongoing commitment rather than a fixed position. My practice continues to evolve through learning, experimentation, and collaboration with communities, partners, and audiences. I recognise that environmental responsibility is not about perfection, but about transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement.
