Eyes on Me is a mixed media wall art that reimagines the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe through the lens of relentless visibility — the gaze that followed her everywhere, shaping both her myth and her vulnerability.
Built on an upcycled canvas featuring a vintage Marilyn print, the work is layered with donated men’s shirt sleeves, carefully arranged to form a dense field of reaching forms. These sleeves symbolise the constant, often invasive attention of admirers and the physical presence of expectation. Circular elements and balloon-formed eyes punctuate the surface, creating a rhythm of watching — a visual chorus of surveillance, desire and projection.
Her familiar red dress is re-formed using balloon petals, introducing a fragile, almost temporary beauty that contrasts with the permanence of her image. Acrylic offcuts, metallic elements and gifted sewing threads in gold and red reference glamour, construction and repair — the systems that both elevated and confined her.
This work reflects on the duality of fame: adoration and objectification, visibility and erasure. Eyes on Me is not a portrait of Marilyn alone, but a broader meditation on women, celebrity, and the cost of being endlessly seen.
